The Lancia Aurelia
The Aurelias in the land of Tuscia, Viterbo
This is the story of our appointment for our habitual spring outing in the center of Italy, in Tuscia, around Viterbo, hosted by our member Fabio Ludovisi ably assisted by his charming wife, Tiziana.
Our cars’ engines did not even have time to cool down at the time we left on Thursday afternoon for Bagnoregio and the visit of the museo Taruffi, the late lamented champion who among others triumphed on the last edition of the Mille Miglia in 1957 : there we could see and appreciate a small microcar collection and also memorabilia (also an Aurelia engine) related to Francesco de Virgilio, the designer of the Aurelia engine and friend of Taruffi from the time when he also drove the Lancia racing cars. From Bagnoregio we also admired the nearby and spectacular rocky outcrop of Civita.
The next day, Friday, we had a guided visit of the most interesting medieval city of Viterbo, including the papal palace. From there we left for a spectacular drive (partly on dirt roads) through century old woods around the volcanic lake of Vico, a pause for a buffet lunch at Mountain Centre near Vitorchiano, where because of the advanced season we were too late to see the bloom of the peonies.
We continued in the afternoon for Bomarzo where we visited the famous Parco dei Mostri. There followed a delightful evening dinner in an agroturismo set in a quiet and beautiful setting in the middle of the countryside.
Saturday, the last day of the Raduno we left for Bolsena lake with a stop to enjoy the sight of the islands, then we proceeded on magnificent roads following the shores of the lake before arriving finally in Tuscania : there we visited in the afternoon the impressive medieval basilicas Of San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore.
The gala dinner at Hotel Terme Salus was an appropriate finish to this magnificent Raduno perfectly organized by Fabio Ludovisi and his spouse, supported by optimal weather conditions, on unique and extraordinary roads, for our enjoyment at the wheel of our much loved Aurelias.
